Excellence Manager at Ocado

We have fantastic opportunity to work in one of Ocado’s latest business streams as an Excellence Manager to join our Operations Team at Ocado Zoom. Ocado Zoom is our 1-hour grocery delivery service. This is an integral role within the business, which will support the fast paced growth of the fulfilment operations, by identifying opportunities for improvement and driving change on site. You will be required to provide ad hoc cover as and when required for our Senior Operations Managers, along with joining the onsite escalations team rota to ensure 24/7 operational stability, as such we will need you to have a flexible approach to work which may involve travel to other locations as needed.

As an Excellence Manager, you must have extensive operational knowledge and will be accountable for owning the improvements roadmap of Zoom. You will drive efficiencies across our 5 pillars and will work closely with the Central Excellence Team as well as other business areas.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities for improvement with the support of the Central Excellence Team, Central Excellence Analysts and Log Dev.
  • Create and maintain a 12 month rolling roadmap detailing how the sites will deliver improvements under all 5 pillars
  • Map resource requirements to deliver the plan and work with Central Excellence to ensure requirements are budgeted for and met
  • Contribute to the network improvements plan and project list, ensuring that your site’s improvement requirements, budget and other resourcing requirements are included in the network plan and being accountable for delivering your site’s part of the network improvement plan
  • To take ownership of and manage the site improvement budget
  • Manage all site projects to budget and ensure any scope change is accounted for, clearly tracking capital and revenue spend for all work within the team
  • Be accountable for the delivery of improvement projects under all 5 pillars ensuring they are all delivered to time and budget
  • Work alongside the Senior Operational and Engineering management onsite, to ensure the smooth roll out of all site projects and operational/engineering
  • resource is allocated as necessary and as per the roadmap
  • Be the point of contact onsite for Log Dev and allocate Site Excellence resource to support and roll out projects as per the roadmap
  • Identify, address and eliminate any resistance to change
  • Work closely with the Central Excellence Team to ensure high quality information flows between site and the rest of the business, facilitating investigations on behalf of Central Excellence where necessary
  • Actively facilitate and encourage site management teams to problem solve exceptions in their areas
  • Work closely with the platform implementation team, to ensure the overview and successful opening of new operating sites within a region.

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience:


  • Previous people management experience with knowledge of People best practices, policies and procedures supported by a basic knowledge of employment law. Previous experience in recruitment and selection
  • A proficiency in analysing business operations and translating these into requirements for continuous improvement projects, working with all key customers to reach agreement on business requirements
  • A proficiency in developing detailed technical specifications based on business requirements
  • High levels of PC/Microsoft package/Google suite literacy
  • Problem solving skills with a solution focus and the ability to think laterally, using your own initiative to devise new and more effective ways of working, and dealing quickly and appropriately with a specific customer or team issue
  • Strong negotiation and mediation skills with the ability to manage conflict
  • Skills to persuade, negotiate, influence and inform key stakeholders


  • Confidence in delivering informative, well-organised presentations
  • Experience of managing and delivering all aspects of complex change projects, including planning, stakeholder management, risk analysis, reporting and communications 
  • Previous experience managing budgets
  • Previous experience in a continuous improvement environment
  • Previous experience in a 24/7 productivity conscious warehouse environment
  • Previous experience of working in an environment of similar scale
  • Working knowledge of food safety practices
  • Full current and clean driving license
